Petteia is an ancient Greek strategy board game for 2 players, dating back at least the 5th century BCE. It involves the movement of pieces on a grid to capture opponents via surrounding them. It is considered an ancestor to chess and similar to ludus latrunculorum. It focused on tactical, custodial capture, often played on 8 x 8, or similar boards.

🪶Origins: Originating from Egypt or the Eastern Mediterranean, it was popular in Greece and later adopted by the Romans.

♟️Gameplay: Players moved counters (often called pessoi) with the goal of capturing opposing pieces by trapping them between two of their own pieces.

🏺Cultural Significance: Famously depicted in Greek art, such as a scene of Achilles and Ajax playing a game while ignoring the Trojan War.

The ancients Greeks believed the game was made by Palamedes, the inventor of letters.

🏛️Homer mentions the game in the Odyssey where he mentions Penelope's suitors playing Petteia.
